Distinct genetic structure in populations of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) shown by genetic markers ISSR and COI gene Rev. Bras. entomol.
Barbosa,Nara C. C. P.; Freitas,Sérgio de; Morales,Adriana C..
Distinct genetic structure in populations of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) shown by genetic markers ISSR and COI gene. Green lacewings are generalist predators, and the species Chrysoperla externa presents a great potential for use in biological control of agricultural pests due to its high predation and reproduction capacities, as well as its easy mass rearing in the laboratory. The adaptive success of a species is related to genetic variability, so that population genetic studies are extremely important in order to maximize success of the biological control. Thus, the present study used nuclear (Inter Simple Sequence Repeat - ISSR) and mitochondrial (Cytochrome Oxidase I - COI) molecular markers to estimate the genetic variability...

Distribución, áreas de concentración y estructura de la población del abadejo (Genypterus blacodes) OceanDocs
Renzi, M.A..
The "abadejo" is one of the species that has been traditionally exploited in the Argentine Sea. Although the capture was not very important, it has been increased in the last years. In this work, the structure of the concentration areas of summer, spring and winter distribution and other biological items were analyzed, basing on the data collected during cruises effected by R/V "Walther Herwing" and R/V "Shinkai Maru" in these waters during 1978/79. Winter and spring distribution patterns showed the highest concentrations located between 41º and 48º SL, specially on the slope. Summer distribution pattern showed the concentration areas located between 43º30' and 48º30' LS shifted rather to the coast when comparing to the previous one. During the winter, in...

Cassia, M.C.; Hansen, J.E..
The Patagonian cod (Salilota australis) inhabits the SW Atlantic from 38°S up to 55°S, as well as the Pacific Ocean from 40°S up to 57°S. The annual catches of this species by both the Argentine fleet and those operating around the Malvinas Islands have significantly increased during the decade 1990-2000, peaking to 16,556 t in 1996. After this, a marked decrease in landings was noticed, and during 2003 the catch was 7,924 t. Seasonal distribution, concentration grounds, and population structure of the Patagonian cod from the Argentine Sea are described, and the mean densities of the species are seasonally related to latitude, temperature and depth, on the basis of data from surveys carried out by the INIDEP research vessels in 1992 and 1993. Highest mean...

Disturbance induced decoupling between host genetics and composition of the associated microbiome ArchiMer
Wegner, Karl Mathias; Volkenborn, Nils; Peter, Hannes; Eiler, Alexander.
Background Studies of oyster microbiomes have revealed that a limited number of microbes, including pathogens, can dominate microbial communities in host tissues such as gills and gut. Much of the bacterial diversity however remains underexplored and unexplained, although environmental conditions and host genetics have been implicated. We used 454 next generation 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of individually tagged PCR reactions to explore the diversity of bacterial communities in gill tissue of the invasive Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas stemming from genetically differentiated beds under ambient outdoor conditions and after a multifaceted disturbance treatment imposing stress on the host. Results While the gill associated microbial communities in...

El savorin Seriolella porosa como un recurso estacional en el Golfo San Matias, Argentina OceanDocs
Perier, M.R.; Di Giácomo, E.E..
The San Matias Gulf (Argentine Sea) fishery was historically developed and based on the catching of a target species: the common hake Merluccius hubbsi. There are also other marketable species such as the savorin Seriolella porosa. The presence of this species in the gulf is characterized by its abundance, population structure and biology. The material used was derived from three information sources: fishing survey cruises, landing samplings and record of the fishing activity. The results obtained allowed to delimit a spawning ground and a nursery area. The relative abundance of the resource showed seasonal variations with the highest values in August. The captured range size was 19-59 cm for females and 19-56 cm for males. The first sexual maturity was...

Environmental factors affect population structure of tree ferns in the Brazilian subtropical Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Schwartz,Carlos Eduardo; Gasper,André Luís de.
ABSTRACT Tree ferns are important elements of tropical forests, mainly because they are common and provide microhabitats for epiphytic plants. Due to their ecological importance, the aim of this study was to evaluate population structure, distribution, and influence of environmental variables on tree ferns in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. All tree ferns with a diameter at breast height ≥ 10 cm on 418 sampling units (SUs) systematically distributed throughout the study area were measured (total sampled area of 153.4 ha). Population structure was evaluated through classical phytosociological parameters and the relationships among dominance and environmental variables were evaluated through multiple linear regression models. Dicksonia...

Estimation des stocks de poisson des lagons de Nouvelle-Calédonie : 1 – Structure et stocks des communautés des poissons de récifs. ArchiMer
Letourneur, Y; Kulbicki, M; Labrosse, Pierre.
Lagoon fish in New Caledonia are mainly caught by artisanal fisheries and subsistence fishing. Reef fish are the major component of this catch. The present study aimed at estimating these reef fish standing stocks and at finding the main factors influencing the distribution of these fish. Sampling of 904 stations was stratified according to three zones (north, east and west) and three reef types (barrier, intermediate and fringing). Fish communities exhibited strong heterogeneity in their distribution, showing higher biomass (maximum of 447 g.m(-2)) and total standing stock (43 000 tonnes) in the north zone than in the east and west zones. Similarly, observed patterns were dependent on reef types: higher biomass and total standing stock being observed on...

Estructura de la comunidad epifaunal asociada a colonias de vida libre del Hidrocoral Millepora alcicornis Linnaeus 1758 en Bahía Portete, Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
Castro S., C.; Monroy L., M.; Solano, O.D..
The epifaunal community associated with free-living colonies of Millepora alcicornis, the dominant coral species in Portete Bay, was characterized from twenty living colonies randomly collected within a shallow Thalassia testudinum seabed. The three-dimensional growth colonies sheltered 15 families, 15 genera and 18 mobile invertebrate species. The 97% of individuals was represented by decapods crustaceans specially adapted as to live in association with the host. Within them, the porcelanid Petrolisthes armatus, representing 79% of the epifauna (961 individuals), was exclusively found in a juvenile stage suggesting that M. alcicornis is mainly used by this species as a nursery zone. The epifaunal composition is partially related to coral living tissue...
